How to Start Your Own Salsa Business - Chapter 12

Chapter 12: Getting Your Salsa into Grocery Stores and Working with Distributors

Farmers-market proof of concept is valuable, but grocery placement requires different preparation.

What buyers usually want to see:

  • Consistent product that matches the filed process
  • Professional packaging and compliant labels
  • Proof of insurance and basic food-safety documentation
  • A clear wholesale price, suggested retail, and margin story
  • Ability to supply reliably (even if you start with one or two stores)

Common paths:

  • Direct to independent grocers or regional chains (often the easiest first step)
  • Through a specialty-food distributor
  • Via a food broker who already has relationships

Start local. Bring samples, a one-page sell sheet (your story, varieties, pricing, and contact), and be ready to discuss minimum orders and delivery. Many stores will trial a small quantity before committing to ongoing orders.

Expect slotting fees, promotional support requests, or chargebacks at larger chains — factor those into your pricing model from Chapter 11.
